Interview with Erik Ronick of Black Gold

The search for tone is something that Erik and Than of Black Gold seem to enjoy immensely. Their sound is that of warmth and dynamics and with the amount of touring under their belt their next album is hotly tipped for big things. Erik took some time out from their schedule to let Clink fire some questions his way.



First off, can you give a little background as to how the four of you met and formed Black Gold?

Well, it all started while I (Eric) was touring with a band called Ambulance LTD. My friend and tour manager at the time brought his friend Than out on the road with us to help out. Than and I became fast friends and soon after decided to try to write some music together. I guess you could say that Black Gold began when Than and I wrote our first song (Run) together. I think we both went home that day with our heads spinning with excitement. We met our Guitar player (Alistair Paxton) through Than sister and we hit it off immediately. Since Al joined up, we haven’t been able to go anywhere without him.

It’s almost been 2 years now since Rush was released, have you been writing new material? And if so how has the writing been?

At this point, we are overflowing with new material. We are pretty much always writing, but we have really had time to hunker down and hash things out in the last few months. I feel really excited about the material we are working on these days. I feel like we are really discovering ourselves as a band.

As the November “T-Mobile Artist-of-the-Month,” Black Gold will be featured for one month in promotions throughout the Rock Band Network Music Store and on the official game website, http://www.RockBand.com, including the RBN content hub at http://t-mobile.rockband.com, a rich source of information about Rock Band Network, including Inside RBN, a source for consumers to discover new music, and Creators Club, a source for artist/authors/labels to find out more about the RBN authoring process.

Can someone who's actually played Rock Band explain this to us? Can you just stream the music or something?> Or do you get to play Plans on your game?

Also, photos & show report from BG's London gig a couple weeks back when I actually have time away from school work to clean up said photos.

Hey. Here's a video of BG's new song (which I'm 99% sure was called) "Heaven Come Back." They played it at the show at Irving Plaza in NYC last month. It took me forever to upload, but it sounds great.

The band's current single, "Shine", has been used in the weekly farewell montage for contestants on So You Think You Can Dance this season. Although Black Gold currently have no tours scheduled (though they have been writing new music!) you can see them perform live for yourself this week on the show's season finale this Thursday!
